Success for Beddau road safety campaign

A local campaign to improve road safety at a notorious junction in Beddau has received the welcome news that the Welsh Government WILL fund changes to the road layout.

The junction – located between Gwaunmiskin Road and Llantrisant Road – has been the source of several accidents over recent months – and locals have been calling for action to be taken.

South Wales Central AM Andrew RT Davies and Llantrisant Community Councillor Sam Trask have been leading a campaign for some time for the work to be undertaken – but initially the Welsh Government refused to fund it under the Road Safety Capital Grant.

In a letter to Mr Davies – Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure Ken Skates confirmed that RCT Council’s previous bid had been rejected “due to competitive nature of the fund” – but that another funding round was scheduled to open in December.

Mr Davies and Mr Trask vowed to keep up the pressure – and made repeated calls on the Welsh Government to change their position.

The Welsh Government have now announced they will fund the scheme – and the carriageway levels are set to be raised in the middle of the junction – which will be fully controlled by traffic lights.

The work is set to commence in the Spring – and Mr Davies and Mr Trask both welcomed the development.

South Wales Central AM Andrew RT Davies said, “When I visited the junction with Sam – the dangers at Beddau Halt were there for all to see.

“There have been several bumps over recent months – and local people rightly wanted this addressed. When I wrote to the Cabinet Secretary – the Welsh Government initially refused to carry out the works – and I thank them for changing this position.

“Sam’s hard work has paid off and I’m delighted the situation will be rectified.”

Llantrisant Community Councillor Sam Trask said, “I’m pleased that the Welsh Government has reversed its decision regarding funding for the much needed junction improvements at Beddau Halt.

“It has been an accident black spot for years – and now local people can look forward to a safer junction for road users and pedestrians alike. I’d like to thank Andrew RT Davies for his help in getting the funding decision reviewed.”
