Commenting on the news that House of Fraser are set to close two stores in Wales – including the “iconic” Howells Department Store in Cardiff – Welsh Conservative Leader Andrew RT Davies has described the announcement as a “devastating blow”.
The Cardiff store – which has been a mainstay of the city’s shopping scene since it opened in 1856 – among the 31 stores UK wide the company is to close– along with its Cwmbran outlet.
Mr Davies said, “Howells has been part of Cardiff for over 150 years – and has rightly been seen as a city institution.
“To lose it will be a devastating blow – both for the hardworking staff as well as the wider city.
“It has been full of fond memories for generations of shoppers – from visiting Father Christmas as a child to furnishing your first home.
“It goes without saying that I’m deeply disappointed by the announcement – which will leave a huge hole in our city.
“Action must be taken to ensure the city keeps its iconic landmark – and that support is provided to the staff in both Cardiff and Cwmbran whose jobs are at risk.”
