Welsh Conservative AM, Andrew RT Davies, has criticised Morrisons after it emerged its Brecon store was selling chicken from Thailand under British and Union Jack branding.
The ‘misselling’ came to light following a video that was shared on social media, which showed the chicken in full Union Jack packaging but with some small print on the back detailing the true location of its production.
Mr Davies has said that this is ‘misleading consumers’ and in his capacity as Shadow Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has today contacted trading standards at Powys County Council to seek their views on the matter.
Commenting, Shadow Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Andrew RT Davies AM, said:
“This is simply ridiculous from Morrisons and demonstrates why we need stricter food labelling guidelines right across Wales and the UK.
“To package produce in full Union Jack glory when it has been produced in Thailand is misleading consumers and the small detail on the back of its true location is no cover or excuse.
“This is an insult to many hardworking farmers across Wales and it cannot be right that produce from outside the UK is marketed and sold in such a misleading manner. This chicken hasn’t just crossed the road, it’s come half way round the world!
“I’ve today contacted trading standards at Powys County Council and action must be taken to prevent such ‘misselling’ in the future.”
