21st Century Schools Programme "not there to close schools"

Concerns about the closure of Llancarfan Primary School have been raised in the National Assembly for Wales.

At First Minister’s Questions on Tuesday 20th November – South Wales Central AM Andrew RT Davies raised concerns about the Welsh Government’s 21st century schools programme – which he said was effectively being used to shut the school.

When announcing the closure – the Vale of Glamorgan Council cited the scheme – and the fact that it will provide funds to open a new school some 4 miles away in Rhoose.

In response – the First Minister confirmed that the objective of the scheme is “not to close schools” – and confirmed it has been used to refurbish existing schools.

In light of the comments – Mr Davies – who has submitted a formal objection to the plans – has called on the Council to think again.

Mr Davies said, “In justifying the decision – the Council have been explicit that closing the school in Llancarfan is necessary to secure funds for the new school in Rhoose.

“Yet the First Minister has been clear in saying that the scheme is not there to close schools – and that it can be used for either new buildings or to refurbish existing ones.

“I therefore hope the Council will reflect on this and think again – and reverse the decision to close this popular and successful school.”
