Leader of the Welsh Conservative Group in the Assembly, Andrew RT Davies, has expressed his delight that Team GB’s clash with Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium has sold out. He said this "underlined public support for Welsh involvement in team" and urged fans to get behind the side, which could include Welsh stars Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Ryan Giggs. He said: "For too long the debate has focused on the controversy surrounding Welsh involvement and so it is great news that the public has embraced the team on what will be a historic day for Wales and indeed the whole of the UK.
"Reassurances have been received from FIFA over Wales’ future independence as a national side and now it is time to get behind the team. Personally I cannot wait for the competition to start and I look forward to cheering on our Welsh stars and their counterparts from the rest of the UK.
"The experience they will gain playing international tournament football can only benefit the Welsh side going into the World Cup qualifiers this autumn, standing us in good stead as we seek to qualify for our first major tournament since 1958." |
